New comics for the week of May 14th
May 14th, 2008
One of the problems I anticipated when starting these updates was that comics release schedules are generally haphazard. It’s feast or famine depending on the week, and this week it’s famine. But there are still some crumbs!
Given all the callous attempts by publishers to sell me back my childhood, I had assumed Return of the Gremlins was based on the 1984 movie Gremlins and it’s sequel. This is actually based on the original Roald Dahl book, which Walt Kelly had adapted to comics for Disney in the early 1940’s. Written by Dark Horse publisher Mike Richardson, with artwork that matches the modern Disney comics style. Worth a look for Disney and Dahl fans.
“Beginning the epic story that will change the legend of the Dark Knight forever!” Or not. I haven’t been disappointed with any of Grant Morrison Batman issues to date, though. Issue 676 is the first issue of “Batman R.I.P.” which I can almost guarantee will not end with the death of Batman. There’s a preview of the first few pages online.
And the rest: Marc Hansen’s insane daydreamer returns in Ralph Snart Adventures Comic Collection #3 (preview behind link) which features never seen material. Is the All New Iron Manual related to the beautifully illustrated original? The artist is the same, but I couldn’t find any preview images. Chris Claremont tells the story of the X-Men’s children in the limited series GENNEXT (do they really spell it with all caps?) I know little about Toto: The Wonderful Adventure except that it is very loosely based on The Wizard of OZ. With the release of Sgt. Frog Vol 15, the English adaption is only one volume behind it’s Japanese counterpart. Uh, good job guys?
